With Black Rooster Kapelye
May 27 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm
On May 27, before their performance (tickets here), members of Black Rooster Kapelye will lead a rare and unmissable double workshop exploring songs and tunes from the Baltic and Yiddish/klezmer traditions — music that is deeply alive, centuries in the making, and difficult to learn outside of a handful of specialist festivals worldwide.
Participants will split into singing and instrumental groups, each working directly with band members on this unique repertoire drawn from archives across Eastern Europe, (particularly in Latvia),presented by some of the world’s leading practitioners of this music.
Everything will be taught by ear — the way this music has always lived and breathed — with lyric sheets on hand to help with the words, so there’s no music reading, no prior knowledge, and no experience required. Whether you’re a professional musician looking to expand your tonal and stylistic vocabulary, an enthusiastic amateur, or someone who only ever sings in the shower, you’ll leave with something real: a song in your body, a tune in your fingers, and a feel for what makes these traditions so rich, resilient, and endlessly surprising. Suitable for all ages, all instruments, all backgrounds.
Wednesday 27 May – 5.30 – 7pm. Workshop fee is sliding scale, £5–20.
