Toby Hay is a local lad from St Harmon who plays mesmerising and beautiful instrumental music on 12 string guitar. He has released 2 critically acclaimed albums and several EPs through his Cambrian Records label and was nominated for the Welsh Music Prize in 2017 for his album The Gathering. Toby’s music is highly evocative and takes influences from folk and jazz traditions, inspired by history, landscape and the beauty of nature. We have had the pleasure of hosting him as a performer at The Lost ARC many times as the venue has developed and we are thrilled that he has chosen to launch his new album here on October 5th.

The new record – ‘New Music For The 12 String Guitar’ will be officially released on the 1st of November via The state51 Conspiracy

The ‘Red Kite’ custom 12 string guitar used on the record was specially made for Toby by Roger Bucknall of Fylde Guitars and commissioned by The state51 Conspiracy. The guitar is made from Macassar Ebony and Engelmann Spruce and is set up to play in unique tunings. The album was recorded over two days in the Wood Room at Real World Studios. All tracks are live performances with no overdubs or edits.

Toby will be joined at this event by C. Joynes.

Over the last decade, C Joynes has ploughed a singular furrow through solo guitar, with a body of work incorporating English folk-tunes alongside North & West African music, and lifting improvised techniques from the European classical tradition. Shifting to solo electric guitar on his most recent releases he’s currently exploiting the instrument’s potential for placing overdriven garage blues throw- downs alongside the brittle ringing tones of electric folk.

£8 in advance. £10 on the door.

“In an age of often soulless banality and corporate uniformity the fact that one man and an acoustic guitar can create music as authentic and uplifting as this is testimony to Toby Hay’s talent and promise for the future.”
— New Sound Wales

“Time-worn and wistful for days long past, [Toby] Hay’s music overflows with heart and soul, and though wholly born from personal experience, exudes a humanity that makes it universally relatable. How heartening it is to be reminded that there’s still room in this world for music of such genuine character.”
